The Syrian Arab Republic is situated in the Middle East. The country is bordered by Turkey to the north, by Iraq to the east and south-east, by Jordan to the south, Lebanon and Israel to the south-west. The western part of the country is washed by the Mediterranean Sea. The major cities of Syria are Damascus (the capital), Aleppo, Homs, Hama and Latakia. The hilly region of the Golan Heights is located on the border with Israel. The highest peak of the country is Mount Hermon (Anti-Lebanon mountains). The most important agricultural area is the Hawran in the south-west Syria. The main rivers of the country are the Euphrates, the Orontes, and the Tigris. Syria has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and fairly cold winters.
